Preparations are extremely important, whatever occasion we may all be preparing for. A little preparation can certainly go a long way and, if you have watched Doomsday Preppers in NatGeo at least once, you would try your best to understand their paranoia – it’s a whole lot better to be prepared and to have lots of items in your stash than to be caught offguard. Right?

Knowing what to get for your baby, especially if it’s your first time and especially if it came as a surprise, are a big must. Here are a few pointers on the things that you have to be ready for while your little bundle of joy is still in his/her way:

BUDGET
It’s hard to deny the fact that we all need money in most anything we do. Childbirth is one of the most expensive experiences many families have to go through – and that is just the beginning. Doing research on the figures was extremely hard for me back then as there was very little data over the Internet, thus the inspiration for this blog. Most people advised us to save at least 50,000PHP (~1100USD) for normal delivery and as much as 100,000PHP (~2200USD) for caesarean section. There are also delivery packages that you can inquire from at your local hospital but they would accept patients only up to a certain number of months for recordkeeping purposes. This should be around 10,000 to 20,000PHP (~220 to 440USD) and installment payments are already paid during every prenatal checkup. Some packages could also extend up to the baby’s immunization so you only have to pay a very minimal amount for the vaccines. As I started going to the doctor late, I wasn’t able to avail of the package – we had to shell out around 40,000 (~900USD) on D-Day.

EXERCISE

Pregnancy Yoga Poses

She’s amazing.
DISCLAIMER: I wasn’t able to do about 80% of the poses here. Haha. I am only 23 then, so, no worries.

When I told my parents about the pregnancy, the first thing my mom told me was to search Lamaze on the web. It had been very helpful since: they teach various breathing techniques that you can use during labor and childbirth. I believe that these are really important and helpful because it helps the mother focus on the birthing process and thus divert the attention away from the feeling of pain. I also tried a few pregnancy Yoga techniques at home through videos. They were mostly breathing techniques and some had exercises for the pelvic area in order to have an easy delivery.

CLOTHING

According to the many blogs and moms, baby clothing is the one thing you should never splurge on because babies can have sudden growth spurts that you’d be surprised she only got to wear the cute onesie twice. Upon my officemate’s suggestion, we went to a garage sale where we found really great bargains on baby clothes. Plus, they were branded items and in really good condition, too. Of course, we bought a few other items brand new at the local department store. We may have spent only about 5000PHP (~110USD) on baby clothing from prebaby to today.

FURNITURE

I think that the most important baby furniture that the partner and I agreed to purchase was only the crib. We had a budget of around 5000PHP(~110USD) for this as well. I wanted to have one made so I could have it in wood, just like the one my niece used. My niece’s crib was actually still in good condition but it had been borrowed by a lot of people that my mom could no longer remember who had it. We bought one made from aluminum which was lightweight but not as strong and sturdy as the wood one may have been. We got it for a bargain price of around 3500PHP (~80USD) – the same model at another department store still cost 5000PHP (~110USD).

As you may have read, we got a stroller as a gift which saved us around 4000PHP (~90USD) plus a few other clothing items like dresses. Many of them the baby got to wear just very recently so you’d know we never spent much on clothing except for some pairs of pajamas and leggings since the baby was born.

I could tell you, from experience, how helpful having a baby shower for you can be very beneficial money-wise. Hahaha.

There may still be a few other things to prepare for, depending on where you live or what your current situation is (you might need a nursery or winter clothing, for example). This list is not the most comprehensive although a little over the bare minimum and should be able to at least help you have an idea on what to prepare for as you await your little bundle of joy.
